Anne Villamil, an economics professor at the University of Iowa, says many retailers are worried that increased costs will force consumers to limit their gift-giving.

The Business Record hosted a virtual economic panel discussion Thursday, a day after a new report showed inflation at 9.1% compared with a year ago. Participating in the conversation were Peter Orazem, a professor of economics at Iowa State University, and Anne Villamil, an economics professor at the University of Iowa.

With inflation prevalent in Iowans' lives, the Press-Citizen talked to Professor Anne Villamil about what to know regarding inflation and when prices may drop again.

Another nationwide shortage is leaving shelves bare of another essential item, tampons. “The other thing that has been happening is related to the pandemic," says Anne Villamil and economics professor at the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business. "We’ve had tremendous supply chain problems.”

Dr. Anne Villamil is a Professor of Economics at the University of Iowa. She said inflation following the pandemic is going on longer than experts expected. “I think the Fed did not consider the continuing supply chain issues.”

A Common Good report found that multiple types of working Iowa households are struggling to make ends meet. The most basic budget is not attainable for some in the state because of low wages and high living expenses.

"At the core of the issues is people losing their jobs at the start of the pandemic," Nuray Akin said, a visiting associate professor of economics at the University of Iowa. Akin says while the pandemic started over two years ago, it is still affecting companies worldwide. Firms ratcheted down their production in 2020, anticipating lower demand.
